One of the most spectacular and notorious hikes in America is Angels Landing in Zion National Park. It is noteworthy for its precarious final section that includes a 1000 foot drop on either side of the trail as you descend and ascend along the route. It is an intimidating experience and not recommended for young children or those with anxiety over heights. The lifeline of this trail is the chain they anchored into the rock. You can see people literally clinging to this metallic safety net. My wife and I managed to do this hike right before they implemented the lottery for the hike. It was November, and there was ice on the trail (ironically everywhere where there were NO chains). There were places along the trail that felt like “one wrong step…” but it was mostly a mental challenge of just remaining calm and staying focused. The views at the end were a great reward, and we were thrilled with the experience.
