The Power of 3

While I would not consider myself a total numerologist, I am a believer in order and disorder both having an affect on our perception and comfort level. While my workspace is often an example in chaos (I call it stratification or layering of recent history) It does affect my mood and productivity. I also see the value in presenting sequences in certain orders and patterns.

When I approach a design problem, one of my considerations is the connection with that part of the mind that creates associations or “connects the dots”. If this is a project that asks for solidarity, and a feeling of competence, I will deliberately choose even numbers in the patterning and repetition found in the design. Alternatively, if the intended outcome is warm and human, I will make a choice to include odd numbers. The organic world around is not symmetrical. While there is balance, nature is often informally arranged and the result is that it feels more chaotic and organized all at the same time.

3 is a magic number.

I love using 3. It is the perfect odd number. I use it in most of my work and love the aesthetic quality it’s use produces. It also is not accidental that it is a prime number that becomes a foundation of many
